Hello I have a ZS120 atm which i love and hope to get a 180 when i turn 21 soon and can afford the insurance. An old mate of mine from school ( he is a good bit older) has just got one of them new sport clios, they dont do nowt for me! I was just wondering if i would be in with a chance in a drag and then onto the twisty stuff in a race. im sure he will demonstrate that his car is faster than my120 so i need to be ready in a few months time!

What are my chances given even drving skill.?

It's going to be so close that things like driver ability and minor mods could swing it either way.

A ZS180 will go neck and neck with a Clio172 in a straight line, and possibly edge away at very high speeds. I don't know how much quicker the Clio182 is in the real world. The ZS has one ace though - you can get a lot of power down off the mark for a front wheel drive car :)

If you get beat (which I doubt) come back at him after you've got a closed induction kit and a sports exhaust - you'll wipe him out

Some figures for you.

As std. the Clio 182 puts out:
182bhp
148ft/lb torque
0-60=7.1sec
Vmax=139mph

As std. the ZS180 puts out:
175bhp
177ft/lb torque
0-60=7.3sec
Vmax=139mph

However, as already quoted the Clio has a revvy 4 pot, the ZS180 has a torquier V6, although you might find that vehicle weight comes in to it.
If you get beat, either tune your ZS180 - induction kit, new zorst, ECU chip, or buy a ZT260!

Great advice guys , would definately get ZS 180 modded to make sure i saw him him off even if only by a little , have high flow Air Filter an zorst on zs 120 and love the sound would want the same with a v6 to. There is no way i could let a french made car beat some of the best of british !

What about handling though i never had experience with traction control is it much to his advantage ? ZS has V good Rep for excellent handling an i had my car over a year now so well used to it .

Well, they use the same engine in the Clio Cup racing series, and I've seen them racing at Thruxton (my local circuit). They do seem to handle pretty well, but then the ZS is one of the best handling FWD cars available at the moment. ZS's don't have traction control as far as I know, so try not to bury yr right foot in the carpet on take-off!!! New tyres can be expensive.

I wouldn't be too worried about lack of traction control I was glad to see the back of it when I switched from a V6 Hyundai Coupe to the ZS180.

At least without traction control you're the person in charge. This just means you have to be a bit more careful in the wet but IMO traction control is crap.

As you say handling on the ZS is excellent, but the Clio is good too. They're very closely matched cars in reality.

I have a 'race' regularly with one of these and my ZS180 wins every time. The Clio edges out slightly up to about 55mph, but its never enough for him to get back into lane in front of me. By this time I'm out accelerating him up to 120mph+ and eventually I end up around 75-100 metres in front by the time he's reached the same speed. He never gains after this.

I have ITG maxogen and a PECO cat back 'zorst, but the car is otherwise stock.

The main advantage I see though is that I have much more practical vehicle and not a little girls car like the Clio. Don't get me wrong I used to have a Clio, but I only ever see it in the 1st car market.

Put in simple terms.

Either the 172 or 182 would unfortunately trounce the ZS180 in a drag.

The 172 is in real world terms 1/2 a second quicker to 60 than the 180.

Seen it done, complete with a driver swap. Clio 172 every time.

Yup CLio both 172 and 182 will murder the 180. Unfortunately the 182 will also murder the 180 round the twisty black stuff as well, not too sure about the 172 but it's probably a very similar set up.

However you can stop being a chav :p and be happy that you have a much more comfortable, spacious and generally useful car than the clio, which is basically a pocket rocket. Migth as well buy a bike.

So you had same amount of fuel in each etc? I'm querying since I have a mag review (Top Gear I think) which says "what was surprising was the ZS180 matched the Clio all the way". There are split times from 0 to 100 and the ZS is the same or quicker until about 100mph where they had the Clio slightly quicker.

I have had a 5 GT Turbo and recently thought of going for the CLIO, this car WILL OUT HANDLE the ZS in the twisties, it really has a fantastic chassis. straight line performance is roughly the same, but I felt that the CLIO ran out of puff after 110. ZS kept on til 130.

Go for the ZS, and do some track based training to improve your skills.

On a twisty road the ZS will probably have a slight advantage, because of the handling and torque at lower revs.
Don't count on it, as good as the ZS maybe round corners it's still a much heavier car. The chasis on the little Clio is really very good and extremely stiff. Add that to the fact that it's lighter and smaller as well it goes around like a little go cart, keep it high in the revs and the VVT will be nice and alive on exit.

Personally i'd put money on the clio, i've seen one go round a track and they are very good, even if they do have a tendancy to **** a hind leg.

i have posted many times in threads about this v's that but i learnt yesterday that on the road you will never get a true comparison,,you could race your mate from the lights but fact is they are so close that whoever gets the better start will win and that could alter every time you try so it proves nothing,,,,if you both same skill go to a well organized trackday together, be sensible ,learn the track and have some safe fun,you will come away respecting each others cars for the great machines they are ,even then the driver that grasps the circuit best will be quickest but the point is its legal and relatively safe,,,,,lets just agree that they are both great cars,,, been there done it got the t shirt so i know.

well i kinow which car i will be aving , the sound of thta V6 will win everytime , plus i do think the clio is a bit girly compared to the ZS. Ill just have to hope that my old mate cant drive it right can keeps itout of its VVT power band once or twice round the twisty ( on a trackday of course) still should be fun though.

Thanks everyone!
