hi, I recently bought a 2001 MGF stepspeed.it had broken gearbox (wasn't driving in any gears).after much research on this good site, I removed the box sump and out fell handfuls of what looked like chain links.told me bands had broke so new gearbox required!.i have since replaced engine and gearbox as the original had boiling up problems.engine is now running well with no overheating issues. My problem is the gearbox is not driving in any gears again!!.I have used new cvt oil from local bmw/mini dealer which wasn't cheap (atf 5) was part number they said that was the new number from ezl799.it is selecting through all positions the only movement you get is if you give it a rev, then the friction from the diff sends one wheel turning but any resistance stops wheel.dash only shows D1 and 2 and R.i have since removed sump and found 3 small pieces of metal and fingertip full of metal powder in sump.ile try and post pictures.the guy I bought engine and box from says the car drove on and off recovery wagon and was driving in all gears on axle stands as couldn't be roadtested as was accident damaged.could it be something electronic or does the 3 pieces of metal suggest serious mechanical failure.next step is to remove all again!!!.(not letting me add pictures for some reason), 2 of the pieces of metal were about140mm long and were curved and resembled broken parts of piston rings. any ideas? HELP

Without seeing its hard to tell for certain. Put in normal drive (dont use sport). Is there a diffrence in forward and reverse? From what you discribed it could be a problem with the clutch pack. If not then the pump. If clutch pack , when you drained gearbox first time was there any black bits in fluid. A common way to bugger the gearbox is if it has been towed say after an accident.

Just to be clear. You put in gearbox. Correct oil level. Adjusted gear cable correctly. Conected multi pin conector and other sensors. Ran on the ground into D and R and no movement even when throtle pressed. There should be engine note change as gear selected. The D or R came up on the dash display and the gealever base. If so it does sound like you have a dud.

done all this except didn't put on ground .still on axle stands with wheels off.when I select D or R the engine revs go up and down slightly but no drive other than one of the hubs turn slowly when you give it a rev but you can stop this with your hand.but even in reverse, the hub still slowly goes forward. (the same as if you jack up a manual and the wheel turns slightly even though in neutral). thanks

To change the clutch pack you will need to split the gearbox. Nothing too difficult but be carfull with the maiting surfaces as there is no gaskit just sealent. Also there is a linking bar inside that needs to be undone prior to full seperation. Practice on your one with the broken belt. As long as you make sure to note the order and placement of the components you should not have too much dificulty in swaping over the clutch packs. They look very much like motorbike wet clutch ones. Check for wear, when they are worn they will be smooth and continus.

ive opened both boxes up, first one as expected more bits of bands fell out.clutches though appear to be in good condition with no signs of wear. the 2nd box ive just removed from car ive opened and found another piece of met to match the pieces already found.does look like retaining ring but not as thick as the ones that hold in the clutch assemblies, they are still in place.what I have found and believe to be strange is the most of the clutch plates are BONE DRY.the particulary dry ones showing sighs of little heat cracks on the ferodo material. could this be signs of pump failure?.i know the gearbox may have been idle for some period of time before I received it and fitted it, but I had the engine running best part of hour or so as I had to bleed the coolant system on the car and check coolant fans were working at running temp and also recheck cvt fluid level when warm.your thought would be appreciated. im going to remove clutch packs to see if I can find where this broken ring has come from. thanks again stevie
